William Shakespeare - All's Well That Ends Well
Translated by: Maciej Słomczyński

All’s Well That Ends Well is a play by William Shakespeare written between 1601 and 1608, published in the First Folio in 1623. Like Measure for Measure, it cannot be unambiguously classified as tragedy or comedy. It is one of the least frequently performed of Shakespeare's works.
The story is about Helena, a beautiful girl of low birth, who is given the hand of count Bertram in return for having cured the king. Bertram, however, is not willing to marry an unsuitable partner. He prefers to fight in war rather than wed under compulsion. Helena will have to resort to deceit in order to lead him to the altar.

William Shakespeare born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, died on April 23, 1616. He is considered one of the most eminent British writers and theatre reformers. Shakespeare wrote around 40 plays, 154 sonnets as well as works of other literary genres. Although he received some recognition during his lifetime, only after his death did he get the praise he deserved. He is regarded as England’s national poet.
Shakespeare’s works were translated into most modern languages. First translation into Polish dates back to 1839. His plays are performed all over the world. Moreover, he is the most quoted writer in the English-speaking world.
